Len and Joyce Tufts

Len and Joyce Tufts love their home and the land it sits on - so much that they wanted to find a way to protect it.  Rob Evans, then with the NC Plant Conservation Program, helped them find a way.  They sold their land to the state to protect the longleaf forests, Lilium porophilum (Sandhills lily) and other rare species.

They maintained a life tenancy in the house and surrounding few acres so they could remain where they wanted to ive our their lives

Len Tufts died this past winter, secure in the knowledge that his land was protected, Joyce can remain in the house as long as she wants, and he could fall asleep each night looking out over the land and pond he treasured.

Our condolences to Joyce, and our admiration to the two of them for caring about North Carolina and serving as models of how to express that care.
